October’s Lunch Poems reading at SFU Harbour Centre’s Teck Gallery features poets Holly Flauto and Rahat Kurd.
Holly Flauto (she/they) is a poet, storyteller, learner and instructor living and writing on the traditional ancestral and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Selilwitulh Nations. Her fiction and creative memoir have previously been published in The Ex-Puritan, Joyland and The Rusty Toque. They also perform as Stella Palermo on local story and poetry slam stages. Holly grew up moving between the U.S. and South America; she immigrated to Canada in 2008. Holly teaches writing in the English department at Capilano University.
Rahat Kurd, a writer and poet based in Vancouver, is currently at work on The Book of Z, her second book of poetry. Her most recent essay, “Elegiac Moods: Letters to Agha Shahid Ali,” was published last year in river in an ocean: essays on translation, by trace press in Toronto. Rahat draws on multilingual poetics and is especially interested in the ghazal tradition in Urdu and Persian literature. Her first collection of poems, Cosmophilia, was published by Talonbooks in 2015. The City That Is Leaving Forever: Kashmiri Letters (Talonbooks, 2021), is a hybrid of correspondence and poetry exchanged between Vancouver and Kashmir over a five-year period with poet Sumayya Syed.
