** EVENT 1: DOCUMENTARY SCREENINGS **
Date: Wednesday January 29, 2020
Time: 4:15pm – 6:00pm
Location: CJ 1.114 Loyola Campus, Concordia UniversitySCREENING 1: 82 Names: Syria, Please Don’t Forget Us, is a documentary film that traces the journey of Mansour Omari, a survivor of torture and imprisonment in Syria. As Omari seeks to rebuild his life in exile and visits sites in Germany that memorialize the victims of the Holocaust, he reflects on how to bring attention to the brutal regime he escaped—and counter extremist ideology in the future. 82 Names is a powerful story of how one man risked his life to document atrocity crimes and bring that evidence to the world.
SCREENING 2: And Along Came a Spider (Va Ankaboot Amad, 2003) is an account of an unrepentant serial killer in modern Iran and a reflection of how ‘evil’ is understood. The subject of the documentary is Saeed Hanaei, a resident of Mashhad who carried out a secret campaign of personally murdering prostitutes. From July 2000 to July 2001 Hanaei killed 16 prostitutes by luring them one-by-one into his apartment while his wife was out and then suffocating them and disposing of the bodies. He was later likened by the press to a spider luring flies to its web and became known as the “spider killer.”
