- Profile
On a cold spring day in 1909, townspeople gathered to witness the opening of Meaford’s new Town Hall and Opera House. Designed by Ellis and Connery and built by James Sparling, the grand Palladian structure replaced the old hall destroyed by fire in 1907.
Mayor J.W. Horsley declared it the largest municipal building in Grey County. It housed council chambers, a courtroom, jail cells, and the Meaford Public Library, serving multiple community functions.
The second-floor Opera House became the cultural heart, hosting plays, concerts, and speakers. After a major renovation in 2006, the Meaford Hall Arts & Cultural Centre reopened, continuing to be an iconic monument to Meaford’s prosperity and progress.
