- Overview
Rob Simms improvises on solo tanbur, activating transnational music traditions through the concept of “Maqamistan” alongside a cinematic and abstract live set by Korea Town Acid and a genre-fluid DJ set by Raf Reza animated by Andrew O’Connor’s vibrant live visuals for the third edition of Link Music Lab’s Infinite Jest.
Where maqam is a system of melodic modes, Rob Simms’ improvisation modulates between modal music traditions, going from Pakistan to Iran (and all the way to Japan on a good day). A multi-instrumentalist and musicologist, Simms specializes in Middle Eastern and West African traditions and is a music professor at York University.
Korean-born, Toronto-based DJ/Producer/Live PA performer Korea Town Acid is a classically trained pianist turned free-form beat manipulator. Drawing from left-field House, Techno and Experimental IDM, KTA’s substantial energy has taken her worldwide, from the Boiler Room to MUTEK Montreal, various clubs in Europe and her hometown of Seoul.
Raf Reza, producer and better half of Orphic Apparition record label, has been integral to Toronto’s music community for over a decade. Enter an elastic DJ set where tracks flow over and under each other through a variety of tempos and time periods. He has played at several venues throughout the UK, Europe and beyond.
Media artist Andrew O’Connor crafts enigmatic realms through an experimental blend of digital and analogue processes to accompany live performance exploring collage, projection mapping and live visuals.
Infinite Jest is about new combinations, play and creativity. Electronic artists, DJs and visual artists coalesce at Reverie on the Park on College Street monthly to share experimental, electronic and world music. Link Music Lab is proud to present this series centred on taking risks and introducing artists and creators.
